Welcome to Guanacaste, Costa Rica – a paradise of lush landscapes, captivating waterfalls, and exhilarating adventures awaiting your discovery. Nestled along the northwestern coast of Costa Rica, Guanacaste is renowned for its stunning beaches, diverse wildlife, and vibrant culture. Embark on a six-day journey filled with unforgettable experiences and immerse yourself in the beauty of this tropical haven.

**Tips for Travelers:**

1. Pack mosquito repellent and motion sickness medication for your journey. The mosquitoes in the rainforest areas are beasty! The roads are winding and some are steep.

2. Plan transportation pickups and drop-offs ahead of time, as taxis are limited at the resort.

3. If you’d like to experience the water taxi to Cocoa Beach, be sure to give at least one day’s notice.

4. Pack water shoes, the beaches we visited were rocky.

Resort Notice

Please be aware plus size ladies, the resort will make you cover it up! I was told at the pool restaurant that I needed to cover myself particularly my bottom half. However, there were others in the restaurant in swimsuits only. I’m guessing because I was more distracting given that I am bottom heavy. SHRUG?! So carry your coverup and/or towel with you.

Resort Review: Riu Guanacaste

Overall, my experience at Riu Guanacaste was average, earning a 6/10 score from me. While the on-site inclusive restaurants provided edible options, they were nothing special, leaving much to be desired in terms of culinary delights. The best restaurants were the Italian restaurant for dinner and surprisingly the buffett. However, the highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the Renova Spa, where I indulged in rejuvenating treatments that added a touch of luxury to my stay.

The beach at the resort left a void in this beach lover’s heart, as it was small and uneventful. I found that venturing off-site to surrounding beaches offered a more fulfilling seaside experience.

Regarding accommodations, the room was sufficient but definitely needed updating. Additionally, the lack of outlets made it challenging to keep devices charged throughout the stay.

On a positive note, the grounds and pools were well-maintained, providing a pleasant environment for relaxation and recreation. However, it’s worth noting that the liquor served on-site didn’t seem to have the desired effect for those in my party who drink regularly. And MAJOR tip, the rooms had a musty, sewer smell upon entering. I noticed it was coming from the toilet, once we closed the lid on the toilet and closed the bathroom door the smell was resolved.

The staff was hit or miss. The waiters at breakfast were better than dinner service. The best service we received was from the bar pool waitress, Flora. Hey girl!!!!

Overall, the Riu Guanacaste has its merits such as the spa and well-kept grounds, there are areas for improvement, particularly in the dining options and room amenities.

The spa is fairly small based on other resort spa’s I have been to. But this one is maintained well. The The spa houses hot and cold plunge pools, pedicure stations and the fitness center. We spent about 30 minutes prior to our massage and facial at the plunge pools. Definitely check out the spa website before you go as we were able to book for a special price. The massage and facial were phenomenal, definitely a highlight of my trip.
